A Day Out with Thomas, sort of....

We took Cole to "A Day Out with Thomas" yesterday as part of his birthday celebration. I was very excited to take him as he has been a bit Thomas obsessed for quite some time. He positively lit up when we first got there and he got his first glimpse of Thomas. However, he really didn't want to do much else but stare at Thomas and explore all of the Thomas toys in the souvenir shop. He did like to look at the big trains that they had at the Station, but when it came time for our ride on Thomas, things drastically changed. He was pulling back a little bit when we were walking up to the passenger cars, but walked right on without any prodding. Once we found a seat he kept asking to get off and that's when the meltdown of all meltdowns started. He threw the worst tantrum I have ever seen from him, complete with kicking, screaming, writhing on the floor and, of course, tears. It was awful. Rob and I were both embarrassed. He usually gets over his tantrums quickly though and we gave him several minutes to work through it. Unfortunately, that didn't work and the fit only got worse. Rather than subject the other passengers to a 25 minute torture session, we packed up and left without taking our ride. The nice gentleman letting us out offered to let us take a ride at a later time that day, but we declined. Nothing was going to make him want to be on that train, no matter what we did, so we got in the car and drove the 2 hours home. All in all, it was quite a disappointment.

Here are the photos from our trip, the last one shows the beginning of the meltdown from hell:

He looked to be really enjoying himself so I am sure you were disappointed that he didn't want to take the ride. Could it be that after 2 1/2 hour drive he didn't want to be stationary againg. Just guessing! Perhaps when he is older he will get another opportunity to take the ride. Kudos to both of you for attempting to make his birthday present a really special one. The pictures are adorable.. Love, Mima & Poppa

I'm so sorry that Cole had a meltdown! At least you got some really good pictures!

I honestly think it was a fear thing. Either fear of the train itself or fear of all the people in a close, confined space. We may try again next year if he still likes Thomas.

I didn't realize you had a blog Tara! Sorry the Day out with Thomas was a bust. Hopefully if you try again he'll understand and not get so scared.
